If you’re looking for a beautiful wooden hand-crafted pen, to treasure yourself or gift to someone else,, you’re in the right place.
All HOLLEY-WOOD PENS are unique in colour and grain pattern. They’re hand crafted from rare, indigenous African hard woods and then meticulously finished and beautifully polished.
Most of our pens are made from indigenous African hard woods, such as African Wild Olive, Rhodesian Teak, Red Ivory, Premna Mooiensis and others such as Kiaat, Panga Panga etc.
These woods are personally collected in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal with permission from the relevant land owners (some pieces are actually saved from the camp fire!). No wood is cut from growing trees.
HOLLEY-WOOD PENS is a small hobby-turned business operated by myself and my wife Kathy, located in Gillitts, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
My love for working with wood started at a tender age. I remember making things out of wood from as young as 11 years old. Over the years I’ve crafted items such as model ships, clocks, wall units, driftwood lamps, coffee tables and hat rails. After getting two lathes in recent years I now produce bowls, candle holders and my favourite of all – pens.
As a member of a Woodcrafters’ and Turners’ Association, I’ve learnt a great deal in terms of techniques, finishes and other innovative ideas.
A hardwood log is cut to size with a chain saw and then the pen blanks are cut on a band saw.
These blanks are individually hand-turned on the lathe, sanded with progressively finer abrasives to give an extremely smooth finish. They’re then sealed, rubbed with a polish compound and then friction polished with a hard wax. This gives the pen a durable finish, yet retains the organic “wood” feel. The pen is then assembled.
